Advanced Riso Artist Books Workshop: Concertina Books for Artists, Designers, and Creatives!

  • Silly Gooze Editions Building 5, The Depot, Bridge Street Northampton, England, NN7 4PS United Kingdom (map)

Join us at Silly Gooze Editions for a hands-on, design-led workshop exploring how to create artist books using Risograph printing. Across two immersive days, you’ll design, print, and bind your own limited-edition concertina book – perfect for exhibiting, gifting, or selling.

🪿 Day 1 is all about design and print. Bring your ideas, sketches, texts, or visuals and we’ll guide you through prepping artwork for Risograph printing. You’ll create a two-colour layout for a double-sided, six-panel concertina book – that’s 10 pages including endpapers, ready for folding and bookmaking the next day. Choose from a range of heavyweight papers that allow your finished book to stand upright like a small display piece.

🪿 Day 2 is all about the build. You’ll learn how to fold and assemble a concertina book with structure and presence – including making a blank mock-up to practice the technique first. Choose from a selection of book cloths to make your hardback covers, and we’ll guide you step-by-step to transform your Riso-printed pages into beautiful, tactile books.

If you plan to incorporate digital elements, please bring your own laptop, tablet, iPad, or preferred hardware to work from. We’ll have scanners and guidance available, but you’ll need your own device for digital editing.

You’ll leave with:

📚 An edition of 5 handmade concertina artist books (approx. 720mm x 100mm)

📘 A blank practice book to take home

🪿 Skills in concertina layout design, Riso file prep, and bookbinding

🪿 Books you can sell, gift, or treasure as part of your own practice

Includes all printing materials, full access to the Riso studio, and snacks to keep you going.

Not suitable for total beginners – this workshop is best for those who’ve done Riso 101 or have equivalent experience.

Both days are 11am til 4pm. Bring your own lunch!

We use a sliding scale pricing model to keep Risograph printing accessible while fairly compensating our studio and artists. Choose the price that fits your situation—no need to provide proof, we trust you to choose honestly.

£130 - Supported Price: If finances are tight, choose the lower end of the scale.

£160 - Standard Price: If you can pay the full rate comfortably, choose this option.

£190 - Pay It Forward: If you’re able, paying at the higher end helps fund lower-cost spots for others.
